Charles Walsh is an abstract painter who lives in the coastal village of Killough, County Down.
Paintings generate visual sensations through colour and form, systemic structure and repetition. The works are contemplative, aesthetic, and austere in their simplicity. The recurring compositional element in the work is the square, the use of fundamental geometry imparting modular simplicity and non-objectivity.
An essential component of Charles Walsh’s practice is in the facture of his own paint, pigments and oil. This enables him to have greater control and gain a deeper understanding into the nature of materials and process.
His work deals with the subtle variations of monochromatic colour; these works, with their dark absorbing surfaces and elusive colours offer a fluid and timeless experience.
His aim is to demonstrate the physical reality of the painting; the painting should be allowed to reveal itself.
